Well doggies, you are in luck, The WellGoodDog Co, has come to town.
As school cook for some thirteen years and a lover of dogs, Jackie Wells decided she’d had enough of cooking for little people and decided to bake for furry friends. Three years ago, while fostering Spaniels from Spaniels for English Spaniel Welfare Jackie made home baked dog treats, as a hobby, to raise money for the charity. The rest, as they say, is history.
Three years on, the hobby became a viable business The WellGoodDog Co was launched, providing tasty healthy dog treats to the lucky pooches of Devon.
Most people assume, because an small Artisan business is run from home, the products are going to be cheap and cheerful! Not many realise – I certainly didn’t – setting up a Canine food business, is more highly regulated than a normal Catering business. Apart from converting a shed into a “canine kitchen” it must be DEFRA approved and compliant with Alpha Animal and Plant Health regs. After an inspection costing £600, a three month approval is then given. Batch tests of baked goods by UCAS approved laboratories, searching for bacteria, cost a further £96, for each individual product and Trading Standards require a further £60 for Composition and Analytical Constituents, Ash, Fat etc. An annual fee of £200 is then required for further compulsory inspections. Once completed and approved the Baker can then BAKE……….
